This interactive data-visualization application shows off the functionality of the new R10X sensor series of german industrial sensor specialist Pepperl+Fuchs. Mounted on several small pillars, one of different sensors of the R10X series can be activated via a physical button, which then delivers measurement data to the application. Featured sensors have single or multiple switch points based on distance, brightness or other criteria, others are distance sensors which deliver distance readings in millimeters. While the interface looks considerably simple, the main challenge of this project was receiving the actual data readings from the sensors and displaying them on the screen in an appealing and intuitive way.

Pepperl+Fuchs Carrera Track
German industrial sensors manufacturer Pepperl+Fuchs had a real audience magnet with this gesture-controlled, modified Scalextric/Carrera track using several different Pepperl+Fuchs sensors.
[…] m box designed an especially eye-catching exhibit for the 2016 Hanover Trade Fair: a giant Scalextric track with gesture-controlled racing cars, facilitated by laser distance sensors. To highlight the sensor specialist’s professional acumen, the project also incorporated light gates for measuring lap times and sensors to scan personalised invitations.
Moontable
m box Bewegtbild GmbH created the concept, design and actually developed the software of an interactive multi-touch-table for the exhibition area of the Mecca Tower, worlds biggest clock tower.
The application shows the highest resolution elevation data of the moon currently available, creating a uniquely high-definition, three-dimensional representation of the moon to be navigated, turned, zoomed into using multi-touch gestures—very much in a way one would interact with Google Maps or Google World. The huge data-sets (more than 100GB of data) is dynamically loaded depending on zoom level, view angle and user selection. Besides the ultra-high-resolution elevation data the application allows to access one of the most comprehensive moon-related databases, which was compiled especially for this project.
The application allows users to access additional information, click on craters or other points of interests like moon landing sites, retrieve further textual information, images, videos and additional data like crater diameters, coordinates, elevation data and so on.
A highlight of the actual exhibit is a control interface built into the application, which enables the control and synchronization of the rotation of a 3D-printed and painted physical moon model of approximately 5 meters in diameter, installed on site in Mecca.
Displaying the sheer amount of data in an interactive real-time-application was only possible by using latest cutting-edge technology like on-demand screen-space geometry tessellation, mutli-threading, so called “compute shaders” which allow for calculations to be done on the graphics card, and more. The communication with external entities like the physical moon exhibit demanded the implementation of advanced communication protocols.

Pulpo iOS App
Pulpo! the tiny squid is a picture book smartphone app and project by copyeditor Margit Knapp and her friends. A range of wonderful, painted images introduces kids to the world of Pulpo, the happy yellow squid. The application is available in 5 different languages: German, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese.
Interactive elements enliven the vivacious picture book app: In the sea, Pulpo encounters many other animals and encourages them to join the fun and play. m box programmed the interactive app based on animated artworks by Claudia Rohrmoser. The lovingly crafted children’s app, which also works well as a bedtime story, is available for iPhone and iPad from the App Store via Bastei Lübbe.
Pulpo song by Emerson and Fang Yu, sung by Rolando Villazón.
BASF History Media Installation
To celebrate the company’s 2015 anniversary, BASF SE overhauled the history segment on display at its visitor center in Ludwigshafen.
Saatchi & Saatchi Pro and m box Bewegtbild jointly developed a contemporary digital installation solution that reminds of analogue history books.
The exhibit, which looks like an oversized library wall, consists of 5 “books”—interactive touch screen installations—allows visitors to explore the rich history of BASF from its beginnings to the current days, retrace intriguing historic developments, view images and videos and request further related information.
The major and most visually striking exhibit, an “open book”, consists of 6 interactive Full HD screens, showing off a chronological timeline of the company’s 150+ year history in an emotional and attractive way.
While these exhibits are located in Ludwigshafen/Germany and in Istanbul/Turkey, they also traveled the world as flexible, easilily configurable mobile exhibits during a global road show.
Besides concept development, m box also handled all visual design, UX and UI development and programming of this complex history installation. It also features a full-fledged content management system (CMS) to maintain the comprehensive data sets that are displayed in the front end.
Vaillant Green Vision VR App
Elastique tasked m box (among other installations) with the animation and programming of an Oculus Rift VR installation for Vaillant’s ISH trade fair booth in Frankfurt.
Green vision: In a minimalist, silvery-white tech landscape, visitors were invited to explore various themed areas on their own through an Oculus Rift VR headset: Here, they could experience Vaillant’s future product realm in a playful and immersive way. Among others, the journey led viewers to an abstracted fuel cell, overflew various aspects of urban energy management and followed the stages of long-term heat storage solutions across an expansive timeline. An iPad was on hand for language selection and controls of the stations.
Telekom CeBIT 2015
In 2015 Telekom AG asked Saatchi & Saatchi Pro to create five interactive applications for Telekom‘s CeBIT trade fair presence, who in turn commissioned m box Bewegtbild GmbH to design, animate and develop these applications based on their initial concepts.
I realized two of these applications, which supported Telekom as consultant-supervised and touchscreen-based product presentation exhibits.
Telekom CeBIT 2014
zweimaleins created the concept for 6 interactive applications for the b2b area of Telekom’s trade fair booth at CeBIT 2014. m box Bewegtbild GmbH was responsible for developing these applications, and to support the installation on site.
Besides the technical realization of the touch applications, m box created 3D-animations that were shown inside these applications. A special highlight was the interactive De-Mail 3D city presented on a 4K touchscreen, as the 3D-Wordle app for DeutschlandLAN.
